Nate was born at 23weeks ad 6 days, he is our miracle baby.  He has had services from the day we brought him home.  We worked with county and private sector providers, but the Scottish Rite has definitely had the most impact on Nate.  He has grown leaps and bounds because of this program.
Before we started sessions with the Scottish Rite Center in November 2015 at age 8, Nate’s language only made sense to those of us that he had frequent interaction with.  He would talk backwar...

What was life like for Riley before coming to Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center?

It was frustrating. His reading was horrible, he hated it, he would cry. I’d have to sit with him and have him sound everything out and he would forget things he had just read before. The school wasn’t helping him. Every year in October the school would have us sign a form saying he probably would not pass to the next grade. Finally, I stopped signing it because I wanted them to take the steps to prevent hi...

When I found the Oakland RiteCare Language Center, my daughter Mason had already been through four years of services for developmental delays (occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech/language therapy) in two different cities. We had recently moved to the East Bay and I was feeling overwhelmed by the difficult IEP system, the extraordinary cost of private speech therapy, and the fact that everyone we were referred to was booked solid. Mason had benefited from some good therapists and t...

Camden is a 7-year-old boy who was referred to our clinic with concerns about delayed reading that had not improved with traditional methods. His reading difficulties had also produced a lot of anxiety about school performance. We took a four-pronged approach to helping Camden. First, Camden was referred out to the UC Berkeley Binocular Vision Clinic to assess whether he had visual tracking problems. It turned out he had severe difficulties with tracking words on the page and spatial planning....

No More Translation for DJ!

I want to start by saying, “Thank you,” to Pam Norton and Nan Busse for all the expert support they have given my child, Darcel (DJ) since he was he was 2 years and 9 months.  His speech and language comprehension and expression difficulties affected every area of his life. His speech and language sounded like he was from another planet. I would have to translate most of what he was talking about for an average person to understand him, so he was reluctant to talk wit...

It was as obvious from the beginning of kindergarten that my son, Hunter, was going to have problems in school. He was diagnosed with auditory processing, language, organizational, and attention issues. The school provided extra help, but the school’s methods and tools produced little improvement. For the first few years, the school kept saying it would get better and easier for him, but, if anything, things seemed to get worse. Hunter went through several programs outside of school to address...

Colette is a 12-year-old girl with mild hearing loss and learning challenges. When she first started at Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center about two years ago, she could hardly read and her conversation was very unstructured. Her stuttering made things more difficult and her lack of focus added another layer of challenge to her learning. Today, I can say that her transformation is almost a miracle. She is not only reading more fluently, but also her reading comprehension skills have imp...

Our daughter Darian was a late talker.  At 2-1/2 she only spoke a handful of words.  As her vocabulary increased, it became evident that she wasn’t speaking at the same level as her peers.  We went through several speech therapists over the next few years, but the improvement was barely noticeable.  When Darian came to the Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center at the age of 5 she was nearly incapable of pronouncing the /g/ and /k/ sounds, which are expected by age 3. Her intelligibility (p...

Santa came to our Holiday Party in the Oakland Scottish Rite Temple Members Lounge December 17, 2015. Sitting with Santa was a thrill for the kids, and even for those "too old" it brought a smile to their lips.

Thanks to the Laurie Haas for catering the event and to the Ladies Club for paying for the food and providing stuffed stockings for every child present, and of course to Tracy Peters for bringing Santa to the party!

A great time was had by all.

Our daughter Ana was diagnosed in kindergarten with expressive and receptive language disorder which, along with being a second language learner, has meant many years of academic challenges.  By middle school, it was far more difficult for her to keep up with what was going on in the classroom and get daily homework completed on time. Ana was referred to the Audiology Department of Children’s Hospital – Oakland by psychologist Dr. Leonard-Pagel to rule out a central auditory processing disorder...
